Lady Vikings defeat Junction City in 4 sets

Hailee Outlaw pounded a team-high 11 kills Thursday against Junction City.

The Siuslaw Vikings volleyball team earned themselves a share of second place in the Sky-Em League on Thursday with a four-set victory over visiting Junction City, 25-23, 19-25, 25-21, 25-18.

That may become a share of first place Tuesday when the Lady Vikings (3-1, 6-4) host league-leading and No. 6-ranked Cottage Grove (4-0, 9-2).

"The girls just played so well as a team tonight, and again everyone had such a great contribution in the win," Siuslaw coach Kari Blake said.

"We have struggled a bit the past couple of games, and I was really proud of them for regrouping, working on some of our weaknesses and coming out with a well-earned win tonight.

"It certainly was a team effort."

Siuslaw front-row players went for the kill, Hailee Outlaw with 11, Mylee Blake with 10 and Desi Tupua with 9 to go with 5 tips for points and 3 blocks.

"Desi has such a knack for knowing when to tip, when to go in for the kill and when to play it safe, scoring a lot of points on the board for us," Blake said.

"Hailee Outlaw and Mylee Blake did an outstanding job on the outside, Rhianna Lane had 6 blocks and Alizabeth Norton had some really great plays at the net."

The Lady Vikings back row also was in line for some praise.

"I was really pleased with our back row play as well as the setting," Blake said. "Hayden Muller, a senior libero, had 23 digs and 16 perfect passes.

"Hayden picked up a ton of balls that probably should've dropped. She was all over the floor again tonight."

Meika Shappell and Tua had solid games in the middle back, while senior setter Zoe Alberty had a big night.

"Zoe's accuracy was really on and she did a fabulous job of moving the ball around." Blake said. "Zoe, who also plays right front, had four kills to add to her many assists."

Cate Waggoner stepped in ably for second setter Brynlee Manues, who went down with an injury.

"I was really proud of (Cate) coming cold off the bench and really holding her own," Blake said.

Elsewhere Thursday, Cottage Grove swept at Marist, 25-18, 25-13, 25-20. Wednesday, Marshfield swept visiting Elmira, 25-8, 25-10, 25-19.

Cottage Grove is 4-0 in league, Siuslaw and Marshfield 3-1, Junction City and Marist 1-3 and Elmira 0-4.

Siuslaw's two junior varsity teams also won Thursday against Junction City. Siuslaw plays Saturday at the Junction City Tournament.
