No. 2 Vikings rally to beat No. 3 Challengers

Cascade Christian got down to the Siuslaw 6 as time ran out for the defending 3A state champions.

Siuslaw senior Camp Lacouture is running out of ways to score and get Vikings fans' hearts beating hard.

Friday, Lacouture caught a 38-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Beau Erickson with 37 seconds to play as the Vikings rallied for a 38-34 victory over visiting Cascade Christian, the 3A defending state champion.

The Vikings (4-0) host La Pine next Friday at Hans Petersen Memorial Field. La Pine (2-2) rolled Friday at Pleasant Hill, 42-6.

Lacouture ran, passed and caught a pass for touchdowns Friday, plus ran in a pair of 2-point conversions.

The last-minute TD helped erase a 10-point, 34-24 edge the Challengers took into the fourth quarter.

The Vikings closed the gap to two points on a 10-yard keeper by Erickson with 6:42 to play and a 2-point conversion sweep by senior Braydon Thornton.

Thornton then came up big on defense, picking off a pass at the Siuslaw 10 and returning the ball 22 yards to the 32 with 1:57 to play.

The Vikings then went 68 yards on nine plays, mixing short passes with the power running of Lacouture.

The winning TD toss came on third-and-12.

Cascade Christian made it interesting, with junior quarterback Keith Reed directing a long drive to the Siuslaw 17, where he spiked the ball with a second to play.

Reed was stopped at the 6 as time ran out. The Vikings declined a holding penalty on the Challengers to end the game.

Cascade Christian led after the first (7-0), second (20-16) and third (34-24) quarters, but failed to hold off a determined band of Vikings.

The Challengers, who lost to Marist last week, 41-16, suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time since the 2016 season.

NOTES

The OSAA lists 3A District 2 as one 10-team league, but Siuslaw athletic director Chris Johnson says there are two divisions ... District 2 North is six teams after losing Harrisburg to independent status and District 2 South is four teams after Brookings-Harbor and Douglas went independent. ... Siuslaw's league win is over Sisters, while the remaining four games in the regular season are all league games. ...

Siuslaw AD Chris Johnson, explaining on Facebook to Siuslaw News sports reporter Zac Burtt: "This was not a league game. There are some possible hiccups, but if there are no covid related forfeits in either sub division, the top 2 in each will automatically qualify, and then the next highest ranked teams in the entire Special District 2 will qualify. If there are some late covid forfeits with say a very strong team having to forfeit to a weaker team, the league may choose to give the additional 'wild card' spots to the team or teams forced to forfeit due to the strength of the rest of their season. Sounds simple, right?" ...

Among the night's big plays was an 87-yard fumble return by the Vikings' Ian Sissel, who scooped the ball up on the Siuslaw 3 and rumbled to the Cascade Christian 10. The turnover, coming at the end of the first quarter, set up a five-yard TD run by Lacouture three plays into the second quarter. ...
