Colton second, Siuslaw third at Woahink

Philomath freshman Adele Beckstead edged Siuslaw senior Rylee Colton by less than a second Saturday to win the individual girls title at the Woahink Lake Invitational cross country race at Honeyman State Park.

Beckstead won in 20 minutes, 4.7 seconds, with Colton second at 20:05.1 in the 5,000-meter girls varsity final.

The time was Colton's best for the event. Her previous best was 20:53.0 in 2019, the last time the race was held. She ran 21:54.7 as a freshman in 2018.

North Medford, a 6A school, won the team title with 43 points. Philomath was second with 51 and Siuslaw third with 75.

Beckstead led from start to finish, hitting the 1-mile mark at 6:00.8 and the 4.1K split at 16:34.9.

Colton was third after a mile in 6:06.8 and moved to second at 4.1K in 16:37.1.

Siuslaw freshman Addison McNeil was ninth in 21:29.9, sophomore Jane Lacouture 16th in 22:09.8, freshman Macy McNeill 26th in 23:09.9 and freshman Maya Wells 33rd in 23:33.7.

Sophomore Corduroy Holbrook was 34th in 23:36.5.

Next week the Lady Vikings will be at the Paul Mariman Invitational in Philomath, where they are expected to face their chief rivals for the 4A team title, including Marist.

The Siuslaw girls are the defending state champions in 4A.

SMS VIKINGS FINISH FOURTH

The Siuslaw Middle School Vikings girls were fourth among five schools Friday in the Woahink Invitational cross country race at Honeyman State Park.

North Bend won with 49, while Marshfield scored 53, Lincoln (Cottage Grove) 60, Siuslaw 78 and Creswell 116.

Eighth-grader Alison Hughes had the top Siuslaw time of 13 minutes, 34.50 seconds for seventh place. Seventh-grader Brooke Bush of Tillamook won in 12:26.88.
