Vikings No. 4 in most-recent OSAA 3A poll


The Siuslaw Vikings football team has moved to No. 4 in the Oregon School Activities Association 3A rankings.

The Vikings host No. 11 La Pine at 7 p.m. Friday at Hans Petersen Field, their next-to-last home game of the regular season.

Siuslaw will play an unusual Thursday game the following week, hosting 0-4 Pleasant Hill, currently No. 22 in the 26-school 3A football classification.

Defending state champion Cascade Christian is No. 13 following a 38-34 loss Friday at Siuslaw.

South Umpqua, 5-0, is No. 1. Siuslaw and South Umpqua had been scheduled to kick off the season in Florence on Sept. 3, but the game was canceled because of covid protocols.

Siuslaw closes the regular season with a couple of tough road games, Oct. 22 at No. 7-ranked Santiam Christian (3-01) and Oct. 29 at No. 12 Junction City (3-0).

The Vikings were 3-3 last spring, the three losses to La Pine (26-24), Santiam Christian (47-21) and Junction City (48-34).

La Pine scored with 1:12 to play against Siuslaw in the season opener March 5.

The Vikings were ranked No. 2 in the most-recent OSAAtoday coaches poll. Rainier was No. 1, Santiam Christian No. 6, Junction City No. 7 and La Pine No. 9.

Six of the 10 District 2 teams are in the top 10 in the coaches poll.
