Vikings drop Sky-Em match with Marist, 8-0

Siuslaw coach Londi Tomaro is busy building a soccer program and promoting barrier netting for the Vikings' home field.

The Siuslaw soccer program and the barrier netting around the Vikings' home field continue to be works in progress.

Wednesday, there was another tough loss for the 7-month-old Vikings varsity, 8-0 to visiting Marist.

Tuesday, there was the announcement of another donation supporting the barrier netting project for the field that soccer and baseball share on the corner of 27th and Oak.

"The team started out the game well with a focus on passing and movement," Siuslaw coach Londi Tomaro said. "However, Marist got past the defense and scored a quick goal, which interrupted our focus and got the defense scrambling."

Marist took 16 shots in building a 7-0 halftime lead. Marist scored early in the second half to end the game on the mercy rule.

"The Marist forward line was very fast and moved the ball well," Tomaro said. "They effectively pulled our defense to the outsides and then placed the ball back in the middle where they had additional players waiting to attack the goal."

The Vikings played some offense of their own, taking 11 shots on goal in the first half. Dylan Jensen had 4, Chuck Nelson 3, Jason Garcia 2 and Alex Goss and Braxton Hulet 1 each.

"The game was more competitive than the stats may indicate," Tomaro said.

The Vikings, 0-6 in league and 1-9 overall, play at Marshfield on Monday, then return home the following Wednesday to face Junction City.

Earlier Wednesday, the Siuslaw fell to Marist 4-0 in the junior varsity match. Vikings goalkeeper Sawyer Larson had 18 saves, 10 in the first half.
