Vikings now stand in special district divided

Siuslaw athletic director Chris Johnson

The standings for 3A Special District 2 North are now available on the Oregon School Activities Association website, osaa.org.

"I've been working with the OSAA to get the standings corrected," Siuslaw athletic director Chris Johnson said. "You can see now that we are split into sub divisions."

All 10 schools in 3A Special District 2 had been in one list, giving the appearance of a 10-school league.

Now the district has a six-school North division that includes Siuslaw, as well as a four-school South division.

Games inside the division are "league games" and games between North and South schools are considered "non-league."

Trouble began when Brookings-Harbor, Douglas and Harrisburg dropped from District 2 to start the season.

"The OSAA website was responsible for changing our games to league from non-league," Johnson said. "Happens automatically. Hopefully it's all straightened out soon."

Cascade Christian's loss to Siuslaw last Friday is listed as a league loss for the Challengers, when it should only count on the overall record.

The Vikings (1-0 in league, 4-0 overall) host La Pine (1-0, 2-2) at 7 p.m. Friday at Hans Petersen Memorial Field.

Siuslaw's four remaining regular-season games are all considered league games.

Two schools from each division will automatically qualify for the 16-team 3A playoffs.

"If there are no covid-related cancellations, the top two in each sub-division will make the playoffs, and then the next two highest teams from the OSAA ranking will be added as at-large bids," Johnson said.

"If there are covid-related cancellations, the top two in each sub division will still qualify, but the at-large qualifiers will be decided by the athletic directors."

Siuslaw appears to be in a four-school battle for the two automatic berths with La Pine, Junction City (2-0, 3-0) and Santiam Christian (1-0, 3-1).

The Vikings play both Junction City and Santiam Christian on the road.

The two remaining North schools — Pleasant Hill (0-2, 0-4) and Sisters (0-3, 0-4) — appear to be long shots at best to make the playoffs.

In other league games Friday, Junction City is at Santiam Christian (Adair Village) and Sisters is at Pleasant Hill.

In the Special District South, Cascade Christian (0-0, 1-2) and St. Mary's (0-1, 3-2) meet in Medford. South Umpqua (1-0, 5-0) plays Burns (3-1) in a non-league game Saturday at Caldera High School in Bend, while Sutherlin (0-0, 4-1) has a bye.

FALL FORWARD

Looking forward to next fall, when the OSAA will redistrict, all Vikings sports will be 3A, whether the association remains at six classifications or goes to five.

If six, Siuslaw would be with Creswell, Harrisburg, Jefferson, La Pine, Pleasant Hill and Santiam Christian, based on the latest draft by the OSAA committee in charge of classification and districting.

If five, Siuslaw would be with Creswell, Elmira, Harrisburg, Junction City, La Pine, Marist, Pleasant Hill and Sisters.

"I have let our delegate assembly rep know that we are in favor of the six-classification model,"Johnson said.

The committee has meetings this coming Monday, Nov. 1 and Nov. 22. A vote of the delegate assembly on the final draft is Dec. 13.
