Vikings mount another fourth-quarter rally

Senior running back Camp Lacouture ran for three touchdowns and more than 130 yards against La Pine.

The Siuslaw Vikings football team's three favorite words this week may be "over on downs."

Friday, the Vikings took the ball back on downs five times and senior Camp Lacouture ran for three touchdowns in a 34-26 victory over the La Pine Hawks at Hans Petersen Field.

Siuslaw, 5-0 overall and 2-0 in league, hosts Pleasant Hill (0-5, 0-3) this coming Thursday in their regular-season home finale.

The Vikings' final fourth-down stop of the Hawks came with 1:20 to play with La Pine on the Siuslaw 34.

The Vikings then went into victory formation, with senior Ethan Aaron taking the final snap of the game.

Siuslaw won with a fourth-quarter rally for the third game in a row, outscoring the Hawks 14-0 in the final 12 minutes.

La Pine stunned Siuslaw with 20 points in the final four minutes of the third quarter to take a 26-20 lead.

The Vikings tied the game at 10:02 mark of the fourth quarter on a quarterback keeper by senior Beau Erickson.

La Pine turned the ball over on downs on a fake punt with 7:05 to play on the Hawks' 41.

Siuslaw drove the 41 yards in eight plays, with Lacouture scoring the game-winner from the 1-yard line with 3:04 to play. Lacouture converted the conversion run for the final points.

La Pine also failed on fourth down three times earlier, all inside Siuslaw territory, including the 13 with 2:09 left in the first half, the 30 with a minute to play before halftime and the 1 with 9:04 left in the third quarter.

The Vikings jumped to a 12-0 lead after the first quarter on TD runs of 5 and 2 yards by Lacouture.

Two-point conversion attempts failed, the first on a run, the second on a pass.

The Hawks cut the lead to 12-6 on a 13-yard pass from junior quarterback Colton Campbell to junior wide receiver Haakon Hanson at the 9:20 mark of the second quarter. A conversion run failed.

The Vikings padded their lead to 14 at 20-6 on an 8-yard pass from Erickson to senior wide receiver Isaac Garza with 6:08 left in the half.

James Smith made a pair of TD-saving tackles on long runs by the Hawks.
