Vikings dominate Paul Mariman Invitational

Siuslaw senior Chad Hughes and junior Samuel Ulrich finished 1-2 Saturday to lead the Vikings to the team title at the Paul Mariman Invitational cross country race in Philomath.

Hughes ran the 5,000-meter course in 16 minutes, 32.5 seconds, followed by Ulrich in 16:36.4.

Philomath's Brody Bushnell, who led at the 1.6K split, was third in 16:44.7.

The Vikings scored 35 points to easily outdistance runner-up and host Philomath, which had 91.

Cottage Grove was third with 117, Bandon fourth with 120, Sisters fifth with 127 and Marist sixth with 146.

Siuslaw, Philomath and Marist were 1-2-3 in the OSAAtoday coaches poll.

Siuslaw junior Kyle Hughes was seventh in 17:04.2, sophomore Dylan Jensen 12th in 17:32.8 and sophomore Talan Ross 13th in 17:34.5.

The Vikings' top five finished 1-2-7-12-13 for 35 points.

Sophomore Braydon Linton was 26th in 18:08.5 and junior Jacob Blankenship 32nd in 18:15.4.

Siuslaw next competes in the West Coast Classic on Friday at the Alderbrook Golf Course in Tillamook.

The Vikings' Run for the Brownies is Oct. 21 at the Florence Golf Course.

The Sky-Em League championships are Oct. 28 in Eugene and the OSAA 4A State Championships Nov. 6 in Eugene.

The Siuslaw boys are defending state champions.
