First-place Pirates rock visiting Vikings, 8-0

The Siuslaw soccer team's 8-0 loss to the Marshfield Pirates on Monday in Coos Bay failed to cloud the assessment of Vikings coach Londi Tomaro.

She went straight to the silver lining.

"Despite the lopsided loss, our team looked improved in both movement and passing," Tomaro said.

"We made attacking presses into dangerous territory for Marshfield and were connecting well on passes moving the ball up the field."

The Vikings now have two good shots at home to make improved play translate into wins, Wednesday against Junction City and Monday against Elmira.

Siuslaw lost 3-1 at Junction City and 2-1 at Elmira in the first round. Junction City and Elmira also are the two schools Siuslaw beat in March in the Vikings' first season at the varsity level.

Monday, Marshfield scored in the first minute of the second half to go up 8-0 and end the game on the mercy rule.

The Pirates, playing on their faster home turf, took 20 shots on goal in building a 7-0 halftime lead.

"We opened the game well and played relatively evenly with the Pirates," Tomaro said.

Vikings sophomore goalkeeper Derrick Vanduch made nine saves. Freshman forward Chuck Nelson had two of the Vikings' four shots on goal. Sophomore forward Dylan Jensen and senior defender Imanol Pelayo had one each.

The Vikings are 1-10 overall and 0-7 in the Sky-Em League.

Marshfield, 6-3-1 overall, shares first place in league at 6-0-1, with Marist third at 5-2.

Junction City and Elmira share fourth place at 1-5-1.
