The Siuslaw Vikings soccer team is continuing to work hard on their goals, in every sense of the word.

Wednesday, the Vikings failed to score a goal for the third game in a row, dropping a 2-0 decision to the visiting Junction City Tigers.

But goals were achieved.

"We played a very good game," Siuslaw coach Londi Tomaro said. "We were very proud of their level of play and the effort and sportsmanship they exhibited."

Monday is senior night for the Vikings, with the goal of closing their home schedule with a win.

That goal is achievable. Siuslaw lost earlier this season at Elmira, 2-1. The Vikings' first win as a varsity program came last spring at home against Elmira, 4-0.

The match Wednesday against Junction City may be an inspiration.

"The team had some extremely good passing sequences," Tomaro said, "moving the ball up the field around the Junction City players.

"Our defense broke up their attack over and over again, and (goalkeeper) Derrick Vanduch made some incredible saves."

Vanduch had eight saves in the first half, which ended in a scoreless tie, and four more in the second half.

The Vikings offense managed four shots on goal in the match, two by Jason Garcia and one each by Chuck Nelson and Ray Brito Xilot.

"The second half of the game became very physical," Tomaro said. "Our team held their own to keep fighting for the ball without fouling their opponents."

The junior varsity match ended in a 4-4 standoff. Eli Tattershall had two goals while Nicholas May and Landon Curley had one each. Goalie Sawyer Larson had eight saves, four in each half.
