SMS Vikings boys win district championship


The Siuslaw Middle School Vikings boys captured the Far West League district cross country championship Thursday at Tugman State Park near North Bend.

Siuslaw scored 49 points to 54 by Myrtle Point and 66 by Harbor Lights. North Bend had 76, Driftwood 126 and Azalea 137.

The Lady Vikings were fourth in a five-school field with 85 points. Coquille had 34, North Bend 55, Marshfield 61 and Driftwood 129.

Eighth-grader Kale Jensen was the first Viking to cross the finish line, fifth in 11 minutes, 34.35 seconds. Eighth-grader Camden Linton was seventh in 11:39.54 and eighth-grader Julian Davidson-Esau 12th in 12:35.18.

Eighth-grader Ayden Bailey was seventh in 12:46.48 and sixth-grader Yair Brito Xilot 21st in 13:06.05.

Seventh-grader Cash Miller of Myrtle Point posted the top boys time for the 3,000 meters of 10:55.72.

Eighth-grader Alison Hughes was the first Lady Vikings runner to cross the finish line, seventh in 12:55.32. Eighth-grader Keira Johnson was 17th in 14:11.43.

There were 66 boys who finished, 53 girls.

Next up for the Vikings is the Umpqua Invite Wednesday, Oct. 20, at Stewart Park, north of Medford on the way to Crater Lake.
