Vikings lose home finale to Elmira, 3-2

Siuslaw freshman midfielder Ray Brito Xilot

The Elmira Falcons scored three second-half goals Monday to rally past the Siuslaw Vikings, 3-2, in a Sky-Em League soccer match at the Siuslaw High School field.

The Vikings close their season Wednesday with a match at Cottage Grove. The game kicks off at 6:30 p.m.

"It was a disappointing result, but overall it was a fun and competitive game," Siuslaw coach Londi Tomaro said. "The team maintained attacking pressure throughout the game and continued to press until the very last minute."

The Vikings took a 1-0 lead into halftime on a goal by sophomore forward Dylan Jensen.

"In the first half we had great attacking plays and moved the ball well," Tomaro said. "We had five shots on goal compared with Elmira's one shot."

The Falcons had only three shots on goal in the second half and all connected.

"Elmira was able to score a couple of goals during chaotic play in the goal box, and one on a breakaway," Tomaro said. "They recorded no additional shots."

Meanwhile, the Vikings had seven shots on goal in the second half, two each by Chuck Nelson and Ray Brito Xilot and one each by Braxton Hulet, Brayden Linton and Jensen. Jason Garcia had two shots on goal while Nelson and Linton had one each in the first half.

Brito Xilot scored the Vikings' second-half goal, while Noel Hernandez record two assists in the game.

The Vikings honored their seven graduating seniors individually and Elmira's five seniors as a group ahead of the match.

Siuslaw is in its second season at the varsity level. The first season was last spring, and included wins over Elmira and Junction City.

The Vikings, with not enough girls to field a girls team, field a coed team playing in a boys league.

With only Wednesday matches remaining, Marshfield sits atop the Sky-Em League at 8-0-1, followed by Cottage Grove at 6-1-2, Marist at 5-3-1, Junction City at 3-5-1, Elmira at 2-6-1 and Siuslaw at 0-9.

The Vikings are 1-12 overall, including a 4-0 win over Creswell at home in the second match of the season.
