The Siuslaw Vikings soccer team's second season of growth and growing pains is in the books.

The Vikings completed their season Wednesday at Cottage Grove, losing 6-0 to finish 1-13 overall and 0-10 in the Sky-Em League boys standings.

"It was a building season for us," Siuslaw coach Londi Tomaro said. "Although we didn't come away with wins, we did see what we need to work on as individuals and as a team to continue to build and improve our program."

She suggests the Vikings are building a winning culture.

"One of the things we are most proud of as coaches is that our teams (junior varsity and varsity) played hard," Tomaro said.

"(They) didn't give up in any of our games regardless of the score differences or the skill level and tactical approach."

Wednesday in Cottage Grove was an example of such play.

"Our varsity played a strong game against a really good opponent," Tomaro said.

"Despite the loss, we have definitely improved and grown as a team throughout the season, both defensively and on the attack.

"We are creating passing sequences and being creative moving the ball up the field."

Siuslaw sophomore goalkeeper Derick Vanduch made 21 saves, including 12 in the first half, which ended with the Lions up 2-0. Senior Kassandra Dietrich had one save.

The Vikings' all-star midfielder, senior Jason Garcia, had a shot on goal in each half.

"Sometimes the best way to identify a strength or weakness is to test oneself against a tough opponent," Tomaro said. "We were able to identify and isolate several areas that we can strengthen to create stronger players and a more competitive game."

Garcia led the Vikings this season with five goals, scoring four goals in four matches during one midseason stretch.

Freshman midfielder Ray Brito Xilot and sophomore forward Dylan Jensen had 3 goals each, while senior forward Dante Galli and freshman forward Chuck Nelson had 1 each.
