The Siuslaw Vikings volleyball team is in the first round of the Oregon School Activities Association Class 4A championships for the first time since the 2013 season.

Tuesday, the No. 8-ranked Lady Vikings eliminated No. 25 Banks at Banks in the play-in round, 25-17, 25-22, 20-25, 25-21.

"Well, we are on our way home with a win!" Siusaw coach Kari Blake said. "I'm very excited for the girls to make it this far and can't wait to see how they do I'm the first round of playoffs.

"While we came away with a win, the game was a little slow and we had too many errors for our comfort. We struggled to play our game and keep our tempo up, which is where we are most comfortable.

"But a win is a win and I'm proud of the girls for pulling off the W.  It was a long bus ride but worth it."

Saturday, Siuslaw will be at No. 11-ranked North Marion, which has the home advantage by winning the Tri-Valley Conference.

The Lady Vikings improved to 14-8 with the win at Banks, their most wins in a season since 2013, when Siuslaw finished 17-5, beat Henley in a play-in game and then lost a first-round match at La Grande.

Siuslaw lost play-in games in 2019, 2017, 2016, 2015 and 2014.

North Marion is 12-6, and shared the league title with Molalla at 9-1, advancing as the No. 1 seed.

The winner of the Siuslaw-North Marion match will play the winner of the Marist-Sisters match next Tuesday (Nov. 2).

The Sky-Em League has five schools in the 16-team championship bracket. Siuslaw, Junction City, Marshfield and Marist all won play-in games to join leage champion Cottage Grove in the first round.

Tickets for first-round matches on through the finals will be available through the OSAA on hometowntracking.com.

Freshman outside hitter Mylee Blake served the final three points of the fourth set and the match as the Lady Vikings rallied from five 8-point deficits, the last at 18-10. Sophomore setter Brynlee Manues had a five-point serving run as Siuslaw went from a 20-16 deficit to a 21-20 lead.

Banks was in control for most of the third set, going ahead 24-15. The Lady Vikings survived five set points but bowed to Banks on a controversial touch on the sixth.

Siuslaw finished off the first set on a kill from junior outside hitter Hailee Outlaw.
