Lady Vikings sweep into OSAA quarterfinals

The Siuslaw Vikings have swept into the quarterfinals of the Oregon School Activities Association Class 4A volleyball championships.

Siuslaw advanced Friday night with a 27-25, 25-20, 25-14 victory over North Marion in a first-round match in Aurora.

"Wow, am I excited about tonight!" Siuslaw coach Kari Blake said. "My phone has been blowing up and I got on the bus to write a wrap up and the girls sat down near me and we just reflected on how awesome that was. We are soaking it all in."

Siuslaw junior middle blocker Desiree Tupua had 18 kills in the match.

"North Marion really worked hard on shutting our outsides down, which left Desi open to just pound the ball at them and boy did she," Blake said.

Coach Blake's match recap:

What a week to be a Viking!! The Siuslaw Volleyball team was ecstatic to add another win in the fall sports collective this week.

If you weren’t able to watch the game, it was a fast-paced, clean game with a tremendous team effort. Desiree Tupua shined, playing all 6 rotations amazing. She ended up with 18 kills, 9 blocks, 12 digs and 12 perfect passes. Desiree pounded the ball at North Marion from all angles, many of them hitting straight to the floor. She really came alive last night and she was rattling the NM defense!

Our serve receive passing was nearly flawless. Meika Shappell had 16 perfect passes off of serve receive while Hayden Muller had 18 digs, taking some hard hits off of the North Marion attack. The sets were really spread around as indicated by stats. Mylee Blake had 20 attacks on the outside for 6 kills, while Hailee Outlaw attacked 19 times from the outside for 6 kills. Desiree Tupua had 26 attacks in total, 19 of them ending in points for us. Rhianna Lane added 7 blocks on the night.

Our second setter, Brynlee Manues went down with a severe sprained ankle on Wednesday and is out for the season. Cate Waggoner did a great job of coming in as the second setter with a solid performance. Cate server error free for 11 serves. Zoe Alberty, our first setter played a great game, showed some amazing hustle and had a few really nice digs and saves to keep the ball alive.

Every kid contributed so much in last night’s game. It doesn’t always show on the stat books, but those who watched know that the girls all worked their tails off, had good communication and played at a pace that allowed us to eventually outrun our opponent. An up-tempo game is definitely where my girls are comfortable and they certainly put that on display last night.  I couldn’t be any more proud how they played.

"She was an absolute powerhouse for us tonight! All of the girls really played amazing, but Desi really shined tonight in both the front row and back row as well."

The Lady Vikings will play Tuesday against the winner of Saturday's match between Marist and top-ranked Sisters at Sisters.

Siuslaw is in the state quarterfinals for the first time since 2011, when it lost in that round to eventual state champion, Crook County, 3-0.

Siuslaw won 8 of the final 9 points of the match, including a run on the serve of junior outside hitter Hailee Outlaw, to close out the Huskies in the third set.

The Lady Vikings won 8 of the final 10 points to take the second set, several points on kills by Desiree Tupua. The Huskies enjoyed three one-point leads, the last at 18-17, before Siuslaw took control.

The first set was tied 11 times before the Lady Vikings took set point on a North Marion hitting error.

North Marion, the Tri-Valley Conference No. 1 seed, finished its season 12-7.

Siuslaw is 15-8, with its most wins since going 17-5 in 2013.
