Fine fall has Vikings fired up for spring

The Siuslaw Vikings clay target team is doing what their coach hopes and expects, getting better every season.

"Sporting clays is significantly more challenging than trap, and my athletes improved a ton over the course of their six-week season," Vikings coach Sean Grundon said Monday.

The fall season has just concluded, and the Vikings chose to compete in sporting clays. Last spring, the Vikings chose to shoot trap in their first season in the Oregon State High School Clay Target League.

"I am excited to see how my team improves this trap season," Grundon said.

Hunter Pimlott stood out among the eight shooters on the Siuslaw team, which can include athletes from both Siuslaw Middle School and Siuslaw High School.

"Hunter did really well this season, better than half the kids in the league," Grundon said.

Other team members included Morgan Delle, Terry Elliott, Kyler Hammerberg, Malakai Kirk, Wade Richmond, Sylas Gorder and Madeleine Danielsson.

Funding is a continuing issue for the activity, which has the sanction of the Siuslaw School District.

"Purchasing ammunition still is a struggle, and we wanted to purchase a shipping container to store our equipment," Grundon said. "However, the cost of one of those has increased three times normal pricing."

The team does have its supporters.

"We have had several donations from local organizations," Grundon said, "like the Elks, VFW, the Sporting Clays range, just to name a few."

Grundon is an eighth-grade mathematics teacher at Siuslaw Middle School, and can be reached by email at sgrundon@siuslaw.k12.or.us.

Registration for the 2022 spring league begins Feb. 1, and closes March 21. The first practice week begins March 27.
