Outlaws escape Lady Vikings in four sets

The Siuslaw Vikings volleyball team was a bit outgunned by the Sisters Outlaws in Tuesday's 4A state quarterfinal in Sisters.

But the Lady Vikings certainly weren't outclassed by the playoffs' No. 1 seed.

The Outlaws won 3-1 to secure a trip this weekend to Corvallis for the final four, 25-23, 19-25, 26-24, 25-20. Sisters plays Philomath in the seminals Friday.

The Lady Vikings, playing their third match in a row far from Florence, head home with heads high, their 15 wins the most by the school since the 2013 team went 17-5.

The Lady Vikings went toe to to with the Outlaws to the end, match point scoring when a Sisters block found the floor on the Siuslaw side of the court.

Siuslaw had battled from an early 6-1 deficit to tie the fourth set at 15. Sisters went on a 4-0 run for a 19-15 lead, holding at least a three-point lead the balance of the match.

The Lady Vikings had double-set point on the Outlaws in the pivotal third set, when Siuslaw held a 24-22 lead. Sisters rallied for four points in a row for the overtime win.

Siuslaw took the second set relatively handily, leading most of the way, taking the set when the ball rolled along the top of the net and spun to the floor on the Sisters side.

The Lady Vikings had their chances in the opening set, scoring five in a row to tie at 22. Tied at 23, Sisters scored the 24th point off a block and set point when the Vikings return was hit long.

Sisters improved to 21-3 with the win. Siuslaw finished 15-9.
