Vikings boys overwhelm 4A field for title


Three Vikings placed in the top seven Saturday as Siuslaw ran away with the OSAA 4A cross country championship at Lane Community College in Eugene.

Siuslaw won the team title with 42 points to 88 by runner-up Sisters. Cottage Grove tied for third with Valley Catholic with 93. Hidden Valley fifth with 135.

Senior Chad Hughes was second overall in 16 minutes, 30.70 seconds, but first in team scoring, and junior Samuel Ulrich was fourth (2nd in team scoring) in 16:49.95.

Individual champion Alexander Garcia-Silver, a Marshfield junior, won in 16:02.20. Phoenix senior Elwood Hosking was fourth in 16:49.93.

Siuslaw junior Kyle Hughes seventh (5th) in 17:05.70, sophomore Brayden Linton was 22nd (16th) in 17:55.60, and sophomore Dylan Jensen 25th (18th) in 18:04.60.

Siuslaw junior Jacob Blankenship was 30th (23rd) in 18:13.30 and sophomore Talan Ross 37th (30th) in 18:34.40.

Siuslaw was comfortably in the lead after the first mile with 60 points to Sisters' 102, and was never threatened.

Siuslaw won the 4A state title this past April at Marist, a championship recognized by everyone except the Oregon School Activities Association.
