Sam Johnson now trails only two legends

Sam Johnson hasn't finished his third season as head football coach at Siuslaw High School, but he already is the third-winningest coach in Vikings history.

The Vikings' win Saturday over La Pine put Johnson at 20-7 overall — 6-4 in 2019, 3-3 in spring 2021 and 11-0 thus far this season.

Only Len Lutero with 196 wins and Tim Dodson with 151 have won more.

Johnson, a former math teacher at Siuslaw High School, had shared third place with Erv Garrison, who was 19-16-1 in four seasons with the Vikings, 1961-64, according to Vikings football historian Don Hunt, a Siuslaw graduate.

Lutero was 196-90-2 in 29 seasons, 1967-95, and Dodson was 151-58 in 20 seasons, 1996-2015.

Johnson's winning percentage of .741 is the highest in school history. Dodson was .722 and Lutero .685.

The Vikings won state titles under both Lutero (1981) and Dodson (2006).

Johnson gets his chance to join them Saturday when the Vikings play South Umpqua for the OSAA 3A title at Cottage Grove High School.

Kickoff is 11 a.m.
