Siuslaw's super senior cross country runners, Chad Hughes and Rylee Colton, have committed to Lane Community College, the Titans announced via social media (Instagram).

The two Vikings, who led their respective teams to OSAA 4A state titles this fall, also are expected to compete for the Titans' track and field teams.

"Chad made a decision to become a top-tier distance runner after his sophomore season," Siuslaw coach Chris Johnson said.

"He went from a person who was on the bubble of being junior varsity to a state runner-up. It was an awesome transformation to witness."

Johnson was equally sanguine about Colton, the leader of a young team of six that included two sophomores and three freshmen.

"Rylee has had an amazing career at Siuslaw," he said. "She's always been good, but as she's matured, her confidence has grown, bringing about high finish after high finish.

"She still has so much room to improve at the next level."

This season, Hughes won the Woahink Lake Invitational, the Paul Mariman Invitational and the West Coast Classic, the latter in a personal-record 16 minutes, 5 seconds.

Hughes was second in both the Sky-Em League district championships and the state championships.

Last spring during track and field he won the Sky-Em League Showcase and the Sky-Em League championships in the 3,000 meters and finished seventh at state in a PR 9:10.65.

Colton won this fall's West Coast Classic and Sky-Em League district championship and finished fifth individually at state. She ran a PR 19:15.8 at the Nike Portland on Sept. 25.

Last spring during track and field in the 3,000 meters she won the Central Coast Invitational, placed second in the Sky-Em League championships and ran a PR 10:56.51 for seventh at state.
