The Siuslaw Vikings' fall success appears to be having a positive impact into the winter season for wrestling.

"There is so much good energy in the school right now," Siuslaw coach Neil Wartnik said. "Our fall season has been Cinderella-like."

Feeding on the success, the Vikings have nearly three dozen athletes out for wrestling this winter.

Practice started Nov. 15 and the first meet is just over a week away, Saturday, Dec. 4, the Cascade Tournament at Turner.

Included in the turnout is at least 10 girls.

That includes freshmen Macali Lade, Ashlyn Hart and Brianna Pavesich, sophomores Makayla Freeman and Rosa Velasco-Mendez, juniors Madison Petterson and Ava Coggins and seniors Chris Hoover, Hayden Muller, Brooke Olson and Bailey Overton.

Muller, wrestling in her fourth season, was fourth place at state last spring.

Top boys returners include juniors Mason Buss, third place at state at 170, and Yoskar De la Mora, sixth place at 120.

Siuslaw has four home meets, including the Sky-Em Dual Meet Championships Jan. 6, the Nick Lutz Invitational Jan. 15 and the District 2 regional Feb. 11-12.

The state championship is Feb. 25-26 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland.
