Things are looking up for Siuslaw Vikings basketball.

The girls continue to improve and the boys are expected back in action after canceling three games because of a lack of healthy players.

"It's still on the schedule," Siuslaw athletic director Chris Johnson said of Tuesday's boys game with Newport, part of a twin bill at Glenn Butler Court.

The girls are scheduled to tip off at 5:45 p.m., the boys to follow. The Siuslaw boys (2-1) won at Newport on Dec. 3, 60-43, while the girls lost 52-2.

"This group of young ladies is working hard to improve," Siuslaw girls coach Aaron McNeill said, "and are eager to get better.

"With such a young, inexperienced team — seven of 12 varsity players had not played in a high school basketball game until this season — our goal is to gain that experience and improve on a daily basis."

The wins have yet to come, but the scoring is improving. At the Harrisburg Tournament this past weekend, eight Lady Vikings scored in the loss to Monroe and six shared in the scoring against Blanchet Catholic.

Siuslaw sophomore point guard Jane Lacouture was selected to the all-tournament team.

The Siuslaw boys and girls teams also are scheduled to play in the Creswell Tournament this coming Friday and Saturday, both opening against Sutherlin on Friday.

The girls tip off a 3 p.m., the boys at 4:30 p.m.

NOTE

The boys junior varsity game will be played at 5:45 p.m. in the auxilary gym instead of 4:15 in the main gym, athletic director Chris Johnson announced.
