The Newport Cubs girls basketball team beat the Siuslaw Vikings for the second time this season, rolling to a 45-14 victory Tuesday at Glenn Butler Court.

"Overall, I feel we are improving," Siuslaw coach Aaron McNeill said. "Like all young teams do, we take some steps forward and an occasional step backwards. I'm pleased with the girls' efforts in practice and games and appreciate their willingness to work hard to get better everyday.

"Freshman Rhianna Lane had another strong rebounding performance, pulling down 10 rebounds. Rhianna is gradually adjusting to not only high school level basketball, but varsity level basketball.  She's becoming more comfortable with the physical play at this level, especially defensively and rebounding. As she continues to work on post moves and becomes more comfortable on the offensive side, I have high hopes for her scoring to improve.

"Senior Gracie Perkins had one of her best scoring games of the season, leading the team with 8 points, including two 3 pointers. One of Gracie's strengths is her shooting, especially from the 3-point line. 

"It is important that we work to get her shots from out of the flow of our offense. I felt we did a solid job of getting Gracie quite a few good looks at the basket. She needs to continue to shoot with confidence."

The Lady Vikings (0-7) play Friday and Saturday in the Bulldog Invitational at Creswell High School.

Siuslaw opens against Class 3A No. 1-ranked Sutherlin at 3 p.m. Friday.

Newport (3-1) next plays in the three-day Seaside Tournament, which starts Thursday.

Newport led 20-5 after the first quarter, 37-9 at halftime and 43-12 after three quarters.

Sophomores Jane Lacouture and Mya Smith and Lane added 2 points each. Lacouture had 5 rebounds and senior Haylee Cole 4.

Newport beat Siuslaw on Dec. 3 in Newport, 52-2.

Elsewhere Tuesday:

Cottage Grove (1-2) hosted Sisters.

No. 8 Marist (3-1) beat visiting Sweet Home, 42-22.

Marshfield (0-2) lost at Brookings-Harbor, 47-32.

No. 3 Junction City (3-1) and Elmira (0-4) did not play.

SIUSLAW TO HOST CROSSOVER

Pairings and times for the 12-school Skyline/Sky-Em Crossover girls basketball tournament in Florence have been released.

The tournament will be Friday-Saturday, Jan. 7-8, at Siuslaw High School's main and auxiliary gyms.

Final pairings will depend on league placings the week of the event.

Friday's Siuslaw game may be moved to 6 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. to benefit the gate.
