Vikings withstand furious Cubs rally, 63-61

The Siuslaw Vikings boys basketball team conducted a lay-in clinic in the fourth quarter Tuesday to hold off the visiting Newport Cubs, 63-61, at Glenn Butler Court.

"The guys who played tonight did an outstanding job of battling after not playing for over a week," Siuslaw coach Dylan Perry said.

The Vikings had to cancel their past three games because of a lack of healthy players, out with illness.

"The only thing that matters is getting the W," Perry said. "But we need to be more disciplined and execute better as we move forward."

All 63 points were scored by seniors, Avery Hart leading with 18 points. Braydon Thornton added 16, Chad Hughes 12 and Camp Lacouture 9.

Newport, down 61-51 with 2:13 to play, had several chances to tie or take the lead near the end of the game, including a 3-point attempt with seconds remaining.

The Cubs closed the gap with a pair of 3-pointers and a field goal in the final two minutes.

But it was a technical foul on Siuslaw with 36 seconds to play that really gave Newport life. The Cubs made both free throws and got the ball with a chance to tie or win.

The Vikings survived three shots at the basket by the Cubs, the last a 3-pointer as time ran out.

Siuslaw had its third win in four games this season, and the first since beating Newport 60-43 on Dec. 3.

Hart had 10 points on five layins in the fourth quarter, including some nice spins moves to the basket.

Siuslaw next plays at the Bulldog Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Creswell High School.

The Vikings open the tournament at 4:30 p.m. Friday against Sutherlin.

Newport (2-3) next plays in the three-day Seaside Holiday Classic, opening Thursday against Astoria.

The Vikings took a 42-38 lead into the fourth quarter, outscoring the Cubs 17-13, thanks in part to three 3-point goals by Thornton.

Siuslaw outgunned the Cubs in the second quarter, 18-9, for a 25-25 tie at halftime.

Newport scored the final 12 points of the first quarter to take a 16-7 lead.

Senior co-captains Kaden Bruns and Jonathan Fritz led the Cubs with 23 and 15 points, respectively.
