The Pleasant Hill Billies scored on a lay-in with 5 seconds to play Tuesday to stun the Siuslaw Vikings, 64-62, in a nonleague boys basketball game at Glenn Butler Court.

The Vikings (4-3) open the Newport Tournament at 5 p.m. next Tuesday against South Umpqua.

Pleasant Hill (8-1) closes out the calendar year with a home game Dec. 30 against Westside Christian.

Tied at 62-62, the Billies took a timeout with 19 seconds to play following a missed free throw by the Vikings on the front end of a one-and-one.

Senior co-captain Braedyn Cantrell received the ball at the top of the key, and drove around the Vikings defense for the game-winning lay-in.

The Billies had tied the score at 62 on a pair of free throws with 36 seconds to play.

Siuslaw, down 60-57, with just over a minute to play, had gone ahead on a 3-point goal by Terry Brody at 1:04 and an Avery Hart rebound lay-in with 47 seconds to play.

The tightly fought fourth quarter was a marked change from the third quarter, which opened with the Siuslaw down 34-29.

The Vikings went on a 9-0 run to open the half, taking a 38-34 lead.

The Billies responded with an 11-0 run for a 45-38 lead.

Siuslaw answered with an 11-0 run, including three 3-pointers, for a 49-45 lead.

The Billies hit a 3-pointer in the waning seconds to trail by one entering the fourth quarter, 49-48.

Pleasant Hill held a 10-point lead with under a minute to play in the first half, 34-24, but the Vikings cut the lead in half, the run punctuated by a 3-point goal by Terry at the buzzer.

Marshfield (7-1) next plays Monday, hosting North Valley.
