Vikings cheerleaders take on state Feb. 12

The Siuslaw Vikings cheerleaders will compete in the coed division at the Oregon School Activities Association state championships Saturday, Feb. 12, at Oregon City High School.

"This year is tough in the coed division," Siuslaw coach Teri Straley said, "mainly because we are in small coed, which means we are competing against all schools with one to two males on their team.

"So we could be competing against teams that have one male and 20 females."

Senior Dante Galli is the lone male on the Vikings team.

Siuslaw is scheduled to perform at 4:15 p.m., with a 2:45 p.m. arrival time, 3:20 photo time and practice times of 3:45 and 3:55.

The Vikings enter the competition with a number of challenges.

"Right now, I have two out due to covid concerns, one is out until Monday with a concussion and one that may not return until Wednesday due to dentist surgery," Straley said.

"Our focus is a little off, with some many doing other sports but we are looking forward to having some practices in these coming weeks with our full team."

All six OSAA classifications will be competing in one coed championship, 17 schools in all.

Other coed teams include Roseburg, Thurston, Philomath, North Salem, McMinnville, Marshfield, Redmond, Milwaukie, North Eugene, North Medford, South Salem, Westview, Southridge, Hood River Valley, South Medford and Tualatin.
