Lady Vikings lose to visiting Marist, 59-16

The Siuslaw Vikings girls basketball team tipped off the second half of Sky-Em League play with a 59-16 loss to Marist at Glenn Butler Court.

The Lady Vikings fell to 0-19 overall and 0-6 in league. OSAA No. 7-ranked Marist is 12-5 and 5-1.

"My goal for our team last night was to execute our offense and be more patient offensively, not forcing it to a teammate in a poor position to score or dribbling ourselves out of our offense," Siuslaw coach Aaron McNeill said.

"I wanted to see us run our offensive plays all the way through, looking to score at the different options along the way. We spent the majority of Monday's practice working on offensive execution and working on the basics of setting solid screens, using the screens effectively, cutting hard, timing of cuts and looking at all options.

"We executed our offense much better and more frequently last night than the prior two games. I was really pleased with how the girls responded to Monday's practice. We may not have scored as many points as we'd wanted, but we did put ourselves in a much better position for quality shots through our offensive execution."

McNeill also had praise for the team's defensive effort.

"We played solid defense for most of the game," he said, "but when you play an extremely talented team like Marist, it is just a challenge to stop them on every possession.

"Marist has a size advantage — over most teams — and some great perimeter shooters that can create nightmares for opposing defenses. We played solid defense initially on most possessions, but gave up too many second and third opportunities, and you cannot do that to any team, let alone a talented team in Marist.

"Give Marist credit, they shot the ball extremely well."

Marist led 39-8 at halftime, and the second half was played with a running clock.

"The girls continue to play hard and with a lot of heart from start to finish," McNeill said. " I couldn't be more pleased with our overall effort, especially during a very challenging season.

"We have two weeks remaining in the season to continue to work and get better, and that's what we plan to do."

Siuslaw next hosts Marshfield at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday.

The Lady Vikings' Senior Night home finale is Tuesday, Feb. 15, against Junction City.
