Vikings sports future is now more in focus

The Siuslaw Vikings football team will defend its Oregon School Activities Association Class 3A title as a member of the seven-school Mountain Valley Conference in 2022-23, through 2025-26.

The OSAA Executive Board, meeting Monday and releasing its update Wednesday, has left open an option for 2A schools to play 11-person 3A football, as Kennedy and Salem Academy are doing.

Vikings football is slotted in the middle of Class 3A, which has 37 schools, 18 larger than Siuslaw, 18 smaller.

Sixteen teams will qualify for the playoffs, including the top three from the Mountain Valley Conference.

Class 2A schools in the ADM 145-75 range will play 9-person football starting next fall.

Four 4A schools will be playing down to 3A in football, including Newport, North Marion, Phoenix and Ontario.

Siuslaw boys soccer is expected to be among 79 teams in eight special districts for 3A/2A/1A.

The fall 2022 proposal has the Vikings in a 14-school special district with Central Linn, Creswell, Crosshill Christian, East Linn Christian Academy, Eddyville Charter, Elmira, Jefferson, Kings Valley Charter, La Pine, Mohawk, Pleasant Hill, Santiam Christian and Sisters.

The Vikings will play in the 3A Mountain Valley Conference in football, volleyball, basketball (boys and girls), baseball and softball.

Other sports will be lodged in special districts.
