Vikings spirits high despite a low showing

The Siuslaw Vikings cheerleaders still have spirit despite a disappointing last-place finish Saturday at the Oregon School Activities Association state championships in Oregon City.

"Myself and my assistant coaches are so proud of what this team achieved this weekend, especially with being in a new division with bigger schools," Siuslaw coach Teri Straley said.

Siuslaw was the smallest school of the all-classifications coed competition, which had mostly Class 6A or Class 5A teams.

The top three (Westview, Tualatin, McMinnville) were all 6A and the bottom three (Philomath, Marshfield, Siuslaw) all 4A.

"This team has been through a lot this week," Straley said. "We found out Tuesday night that one of our teammates had to quarantine due to covid protocols.

"We spent the last three days, one day with our full team, moving people around from stunt to stunt."

That athlete returns to practice Monday as the team prepares for the Oregon Cheerleading Coaches Association Cheer Championships this coming Saturday in Salem.

"They are ready to have their teammate back Monday," Straley said, "and to work hard to compete in our final competition this year at the OCCA Championships."

The spirit is still more than willing.
