Aaron McNeill is wrapping up his first season back as the Siuslaw Vikings girls basketball coach, already missing three of his favorite players.

"I have been fortunate to have three amazing seniors to coach in my return season," McNeill said. "Haylee Cole, Denali Sleeper and Gracie Perkins are not only great teammates, but quality young ladies."

The trio will be saluted at Senior Night on Tuesday, the Lady Vikings' final home game of the season. Tipoff against Junction City at Glenn Butler Court is 5:45 p.m., but come early for the senior sendoff.

Siuslaw plays its season finale Friday at Cottage Grove.

"With such a young and inexperienced team, it is invaluable to have seniors like these young ladies that exhibit the leadership, dedication and enthusiasm needed during a challenging season," McNeill said.

"Each of these seniors is highly respected by their teammates. All are extremely coachable, have great work ethics and are eager to improve — characteristics that a coach desires in their players."

Cole is co-captain of the team, along with sophomore Jane Lacouture.

"Haylee always brings a smile and enthusiasm to every practice and game," McNeill said. "She consistently encourages her younger teammates and does an amazing job of being supportive of all her teammates.

"Haylee has been a consistent contributor on both sides of the court."

Sleeper is a favorite type, the one who helps others shine.

"Denali has been an unselfish teammate and is willing to do anything that benefits her team," McNeill said. "She has become a vital part of our offense.

"Typically when we get an open shot and score, it was due to Denali setting the perfect screen to get her teammate open."

Perkins is the lone player in her fourth year with the Lady Vikings.

"Gracie Perkins is our most experienced senior," said McNeill. "GP, as she is called by coaches and teammates, is our best shooter from outside.

"GP is a quiet, lead-by-example player who is adored by all her teammates."

The Lady Vikings' 14-player roster is young, with six freshmen and three sophomores. Senior leadership has been essential, McNeill said.

"It has been an honor to have the opportunity to coach these three young ladies in their final year of Viking basketball," he said.

"They each have been valuable contributors to our program and will be greatly missed."
