Vikings sweep openers at Sutherlin, 7-1, 7-5

Beau Erickson is adding shutdown closer to his resume as an open-throttle quarterback for the Siuslaw Vikings.

The 6-foot senior righthander had two saves Tuesday as the Vikings opened the baseball season with a doubleheader sweep at Sutherlin, 7-1 and 7-5.

Siuslaw next plays three games in Klamath Falls, a single game Friday at Mazama at 4 p.m. and a doubleheader Saturday at Klamath Union at noon.

"I was really excited to see the team fight back from some adversity," Siuslaw coach Tom Shinn said, noting the Vikings were down 4-0 entering the sixth inning of Game 2. "The guys settled in and fought their way back."

Siuslaw put three runs on the board in the sixth and four in the seventh to set up Erickson's second save.

"Beau had a clutch pitching performance in the second game," Shinn said. "He came in (the bottom of the seventh), worked quickly since it was getting dark and threw strikes.

"He faced only four batters and threw only 12 pitches to close out the night."

For the day, Erickson tossed four hitless innings, struck out eight and walked one.

Senior Ethan Halpin led the Vikings offense, going 4-for-7 on the day with 3 runs, 2 RBIs and a double.

In the opener, senior Isaac Garza was 2-for-4 with a run, 2 RBIs and a stolen base, Halpin 2-for-4 with a run and 2 RBIs and junior Ian Sissel 2-for-3 with an RBI.

In the nightcap, Halpin was 2-for-3 with 2 runs and a double, freshman Joel Sissel was 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a stolen base, senior Jason Garcia 2-for-4 with a run and senior Henry Rankin 1-for-3 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs.

Garcia pitched the first four innings for the win in the opener, allowing 1 hit and striking out six.

Garza picked up the victory in relief in the second game.

"The second game really showed what baseball can be all about," Shinn said. "We hit some balls very well and hard and they ended up being outs.

"Had a few of those found gaps, the start of the game could have been much better for us."

On offense, the Vikings collected 18 hits on the day. On defense, they committed only two errors, both in the second game.

"We are really excited about the 2 and 0 start," Shinn said. "But we saw things we want to clean up before we head to Klamath Falls."
