It had been more than four years since the Siuslaw Vikings won a baseball game by mercy rule.

Saturday at Klamath Falls, the Vikings did it twice, beating Klamath Union in five innings in the opener, 13-3, and in three innings in the nightcap, 22-0.

The sweep improved the Vikings to 4-1 on the season, while the Pelicans, who won their season opener by mercy rule, fell to 1-2.

The Vikings have a pair of doubleheaders at home the next two Fridays, Coquille on March 25 and Pleasant Hill on April 1.

In the nightcap, Vikings pitcher Ethan Halpin "went the distance," throwing 35 pitches, 21 for strikes, while giving up a hit and a walk and facing only 11 batters.

Four Pelican pitchers combined to throw 146 pitches, only 53 for strikes, while walking 16 and hitting 5 Vikings batters.

Isaac Garza and Ian Sissel each scored 3 runs in 3 innings, while Sissel stole 3 bases and Garza 2. The Vikings had 12 stolen bases in the 3-inning romp.

In the opener, Ian Sissel was 2-for-3 with 3 runs, 3 RBIs, a triple and a stolen base; winning pitcher Isaac Garza was 2-for-3 with 2 runs and a stolen base, and cleanup-hitting Ethan Halpin was 2-for-3 with a run, 2 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Noah Dotson had 3 of the Vikings' 11 stolen bases in the game.

"Great bounce back game for the men," Siuslaw coach Tom Shinn said. "After the Mazama game (a 9-2 loss), we talked about reacting positively to the chance to play two games against Klamath Union.

"When we woke up we weren't sure we were going to get to play. The weather had turned pretty bad. Through most of the first game the weather was wet. It was definitely cold.

"I believe the cold contributed a bit to our slow start."

Garza pitched 2 1-3 innings of one-hit, scoreless relief for the win, striking out 3.

Starting pitcher Beau Erickson had 6 strikeouts in 2 2-3 innings, including striking out the side in the bottom of the first after the bases were loaded with Pelicans with no outs.

Erickson threw 27 pitches and Klamath Union starter Noah Daily 30 in the first inning, which ended after 30 minutes with the Vikings leading just 1-0.
