No. 3 Vikings rock unbeaten Coquille, 9-2

Siuslaw senior pitcher Isaac Garza tossed five scoreless innings of relief for the win.

The Siuslaw Vikings are making believers in the baseball world, both at the plate and on the field.

Friday, the Class 4A No. 3-ranked Vikings cooled off the unbeaten Coquille Red Devils, 9-2, at Dodson Field.

Siuslaw (5-1) is off until next Friday, when they host a doubleheader with Pleasant Hill at 3 p.m.

"It was a well-played ball game for us both offensively and defensively," Siuslaw coach Tom Shinn said of Friday's win over Coquille. "Putting up 12 hits is always a plus.

"Defensively having only one error is right on course with what we want to see. It really helps our pitching staff when we play solid defense behind them. The pitchers can throw strikes and expect plays to be made."

Senior Isaac Garza had a big day, hurling five innings of scoreless relief with seven strikeouts for the win while batting 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs and 3 stolen bases.

"Isaac Garza had a great day," Shinn said. "(Junior) Noah Dotson also had a great offensive day for us as well going 2-for-3 and scoring twice. (Senior) Beau Erickson got hot today going 2-for-3 and scoring 3 runs with 3 stolen bases.

"(Senior) Ethan Halpin continued his offensive output going 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI."

Freshman Joel Sissel started for the Vikings, going 2 innings, giving up 2 runs, 1 earned, while walking 2 and striking out 3.

Sissel and Garza combined for 10 strikeouts over the seven-inning game, tossing 77 of 125 total pitches for strikes.

Garza, Erickson and Henry Rankin each had a double in the game, while Jason Garcia had 2 steals and Victor Ayala 1 as the Vikings swiped nine bases on the day.

Coquille, ranked No. 3 in Class 2A/1A, lost its first game of the season, slipping to 3-1.
