The sweet spot is right in the middle of the Siuslaw Youth Soccer Association's five age-group divisions set to kick off the 2022 spring season Saturday.

The six U10 league teams will get to participate in both the Rotary Club-sponsored Easter egg hunt April 16 with the U6 and U8 teams and a season-ending tournament weekend May 14.

There will be no hunting eggs for the two older groups, nor a season-ending tournament for the two younger groups.

Some 196 kids are ready to fire up Saturday, with a nine matches (two U6, eight U8, six U10) at Miller Park and four matches (three U12, one U14) at Petersen Park in Eugene.

A separate U12 all-girls team will be playing most of its matches in Eugene, thanks to a new working relationship with the Lane Youth Soccer Association.

"It's looking good, I expect another great season," SYSA president Cameron Jagoe said. "I'm still a bit stressed out, as usual, but that all goes away when the kids begin to play."

Each team has a coach, though one head coach is waiting to pass the mandatory background check.

"We always make it," Jagoe said, looking ahead to the first weekend, "but it's always by the skin of our teeth."

Uniforms will not be on hand until Friday, when Londi Tomaro drives to Eugene to pick them up.

"We'll sort them out Friday night, and hand them out Saturday morning," Jagoe said.

The SYSA was first established in 2016, and plays fall and spring seasons. A couple of those seasons were lost because of the pandemic.

"We always need coaches, we can always use more officials," Jagoe said.

Miller Park is in reasonably good shape for the season, though Jagoe is troubled the city appears to have abandoned plans to upgrade the fields.

Field conditions, coaches, officials and uniforms — all are in play until opening day.

"All those questions aren't answered until the first weekend of play," Jagoe said. "Call me after the first weekend of games, and I'm fine.

"Everything's been worked out, the kids are having fun, and it's totally worth it."
