Pleasant Hill sweeps Vikings, 12-9 and 6-5

The Pleasant Hill Billies survived a big Siuslaw Vikings rally Friday to complete the sweep of a nonleague baseball doubleheader at Dodson Stadium, 12-9 and 6-5.

The Vikings (5-3) can bounce back in a big way Tuesday when they host 4A No. 1-ranked Hidden Valley at 4 p.m.

The unbeaten Mustangs (8-0) will attempt to break the 4A win-streak record. Hidden Valley has won its past 26 games, including 18-0 last spring to win the state title.

Pleasant Hill leveled its record at 5-5 with the two wins.

Siuslaw trailed 6-1 entering the bottom of the fifth inning, which would be the last played, scoring four runs to come up short.

"The bottom of the fifth inning was pretty exciting to be part of," Siuslaw coach Tom Shinn said. "We strung together some solid swings, with some aggressve baserunning, and just came up a bit short.

"I am happy about the way the team fought back at the end of the game. Unfortunately, the first game took quite some time to finish, and left us on the short end of daylight for the second game."

Rhett Edmunds went the distance for the Billies for the win, striking out eight.

Siuslaw fell behind 8-1 in the opener, then rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the lead to three, 8-5. The teams traded 3-run fifth-inning rallies, the Billies adding a run in the sixth and the Vikings a run in the bottom of the seventh.

The Vikings outhit the Billies 11-6 in the first game, with Beau Erickson 3-for-3 with a 3 runs, an RBI, a double and 3 stolen bases; Ethan Halpin 2-for-5 with a run and 4 RBIs, and Jason Garcia 2-for-3 with an RBI and 2 stolen bases.

"I am proud of the way we hit the ball today," Shinn said. "Nine runs on 11 hits shows that our approach at the plate is working.

"Beau had a really strong day at the bat — he really was on fire. It is great to get him on base and have him run around a bit.

"Ethan Halpin had a strong showing. He has had some very timely hitting for us."

Siuslaw committed five errors in the game and three Vikings pitchers combined to walk 13 batters.
