Junction City sweeps past Vikings, 5-1, 11-2

The Vikings' Ian Sissel was 2-for-2 in the opener with a double, a run scored and a stolen base.

The Siuslaw Vikings baseball team played the Junction City Tigers toe-to-toe for the six innings before eventually dropping a Sky-Em League doubleheader at Jiggs Dodson Stadium, 5-1 and 11-2.

The Vikings (5-7 overall, 0-2 in league) next play a makeup game at Marist on Monday. The two wins lifted Junction City to 7-4 overall, 2-0 in league and No. 9 in the OSAA Class 4A rankings.

The Tigers plated four runs in the top of the seventh to clinch the opener, which was tied at 1-1 entering the final frame.

Ethan Halpin was the tough-luck loser, giving up two unearned runs, scattering four hits and striking out six.

Ian Sissel was 2-for-2 in the game with a double, a run scored and a stolen base.

"Ethan Halpin had another stellar day on the mound," Siuslaw coach Tom Shinn said. "He went deep into the game. Ian Sissel had a great offensive game."

Winning pitcher Chris Ohman went the distance on the mound, striking out six, and helped himself at the plate, driving in three runs.

In the second game, Junction City jumped on Vikings starter Isaac Garza for seven runs in the first two innings. Only two of the seven runs were earned, the Vikings committing four errors in the game.

The Tigers got four more runs off reliever Andrew Jensen-Norman, who went two innings before handing the ball off to freshman Joel Sissel.

"Joel Sissel had a great second game. He totally shut down Junction City," Shinn said. "At the plate, Joel reached base all three times, going 2-for-2 and garnering a walk."

Sissel fired three innings of hitless and scoreless relief to keep the Vikings in the game.

Halpin also was on base three times, hitting 1-for-2 with a double, two walks and an RBI, while Garza had a run, RBI and a double.
