Colton posts fast mile at Prefontaine meet

Siuslaw seniors Rylee Colton and Chad Hughes each posted personal records and fourth-place finishes at in the varsity 1-mile run Saturday in the 20th annual Prefontaine Rotary Invitational in Coos Bay.

Colton was timed in 5 minutes, 26.15 seconds, with Siuslaw freshman Macy McNeill ninth in 5:58.36a. Bandon senior Holly Hunter won in 5:16.96.

Colton is now second on the Vikings' all-time list behind Hannah Rannow, who ran 5:13.44 in 2019 and ahead of Brea Blankenship, who ran 5:42.58 the same year.

Hughes clocked 4:44.41a, with Siuslaw sophomore Talan Ross sixth in 5:00.33a. The top five each ran under 5 minutes, with Crater junior Tyrone Gorze winning in 4:20.09a.

Hughes is now 13th on the all-time Vikings list, ahead of Brendon Jensen, who ran 4:51.29 in 2018.

Siuslaw junior Kyle Hughes and senior Camp Lacouture were fifth and sixth in the pole vault, both clearing 12-6.

Thirty schools from Class 1A through 6A were entered.

No other Siuslaw athletes competed in the invitational.

Grants Pass swept both the boys (91 points) and girls (112)  titles. The Siuslaw boys were 12th of 25 teams with 15 points, while the Lady Vikings were 20th of 21 teams with 5.
