Path to future state titles clearing for Vikings

The Siuslaw Vikings enter the Class 3A sports world next year, and now they have a better road map for achieving the goal of state championships.

The State Championship Committee has released its recommendation for Oregon School Activities Association championships beginning next school year.

Siuslaw is in the Mountain Valley Conference — Class 3A-4 for volleyball, boys and girls basketball, baseball and softball, Class 3A-3 for football.

Other Vikings sports and activities are in special districts, including cross country, soccer, cheerleading, wrestling, band, choir, golf and track and field.

Pending OSAA Executive Board consideration May 2, this is how the next four school years (2022-26) will look:

Cross country

  • Site: Lane Community College, Eugene.
  • Qualifying teams: 12 for 3A boys (top 2 per 4 special districts plus 4 at-large), 14 for 3A/2A/1A girls (top 3 per 4 special districts plus 2 at-large), plus top 7 individuals across the line for each.

Volleyball

  • Site: to be determined
  • Qualifying teams (20-team bracket): 4 for Far West League (3A-5), 3 each for other 5 leagues (including Mountain Valley Conference), 1 at-large.

Soccer (boys and girls)

  • Sites: to be determined
  • Qualifying teams (20-team brackets): to be determined by Executive Board in September

Football

  • Site: neutral site for semifinals and finals, to be determined
  • Qualifying teams (16-team bracket): 3 each from Special Districts 1, 2 and 3; 4 from Special District 4; 2 from Special District 5; plus 1 at-large based on rankings.

Cheerleading

  • Site: Oregon City High School
  • Qualifying teams: The Committee supports the addition of the Gameday division to the State Championships. Extending the maximum number of participants to 30 on the floor at all divisions. Each division (6A, 5A, 4A, 3A/2A/1A, Gameday, 6A/5A COED, 4A/3A/2A/1A COED), must have a minimum of five teams participating to be held. Schools may only participate in one division at the state championships. In the attempt to increase participation, the Committee recommends, along with the increase to a maximum of 30 participants from 20, to separate programs of 16 participants or more (6A, 5A, 4A, 3A/2A/1A) into their own division.

Wrestling

  • Site: to be determined
  • Qualifying teams: 12-person bracket, number of special districts and number of qualifiers per special district to be determined.

Basketball (boys and girls)

  • Sites: Marshfield/North Bend for both
  • Qualifying teams (20-team bracket): 4 for Far West League (3A-5), 3 each for other 5 leagues (including Mountain Valley Conference), 1 at-large.

Band and choir

  • Site: Oregon State University
  • Qualifying schools: Continue with current qualification and structure

Golf

  • Site: rotation of Quail Valley, Trysting Tree, Emerald Valley, Eagle Crest
  • Qualifying teams: 4A/3A/2A/1A Girls - 8 qualifying teams overall via the four special districts. Top 5 individuals from each special district must be in the top 5 overall to qualify for the State Championship. Special District team allocations to be determined by the OSAA Executive Board. 3A/2A/1A Boys - 12 qualifying teams overall via the four special districts. Top 5 individuals from each special district must be in the top 5 overall to qualify for the State Championship. Special District team allocations to be determined by the OSAA Executive Board. Due to the lack of participation data, the State Championship committee recommends allowing the Executive Board flexibility to modify the championships, qualifications, and structures after participation data is available from Spring 2022.

Track and field (boys and girls)

  • Site: Hayward Field, University of Oregon
  • Qualifying teams: top 2 from 5 special districts plus 3 wildcards + standards (13 minimum)

Baseball and softball

  • Sites: to be determined for baseball, University of Oregon for softball
  • Qualifying teams (minimum 16-team bracket): Allocations per league to be determined by the OSAA Executive Board. The State Championship Committee requests that the Executive Board review team participation information and align qualifying percentages for 3A baseball with qualification percentages in 3A volleyball and 3A basketball. Executive Board to determine allocations in February once teams are known.

Siuslaw currently does not participate in all OSAA activities and sports, including swimming, dance/drill,  speech and tennis.
