Busy week ahead for playoff-hunting Vikings

Coach Tom Shinn's Vikings likely will need a couple more wins to clinch a 4A play-in game.

The Siuslaw Vikings baseball teaml is on the cusp of its first OSAA Class 4A play-in game in eight seasons.

The quest resumes at 5 p.m. today at Junction City, continues with a doubleheader at home Wednesday against Cottage Grove and is capped Friday with a game at Cottage Grove.

The Wednesday doubleheader was announced Tuesday by Siuslaw athletic director Chris Johnson.

"The weather for Friday doesn't look promising so we want to get games in while we can, as the end of the season is fast approaching," Johnson said. "There is still some bad weather in the forecast."

Siuslaw enters today's game 6-11 overall, 1-5 in the Sky-Em League and ranked No. 19 by the OSAA computers.

Junction City (11-6, 6-2) is ranked No. 11, while Cottage Grove (2-16, 0-8) is ranked No. 32 among the 33 4A schools.

Eight schools advance to the playoffs as automatic qualifiers, while 16 will be paired off in play-in games. That's 24 schools still alive when the regular season ends.

Two or more wins this week will go a long way in securing one of the six spots based on ranking.

Only nine schools are eliminated at the end of the regular season, and 10 schools have worse records than Siuslaw — 0-13 Corbett, 1-15 Ontario, 2-17 North Valley, 2-16 Cottage Grove, 3-14 Sweet Home, 3-15 Klamath Union, 3-13 Molalla, 3-12 Cascade, 4-9 McLoughlin and 5-13 Astoria.
