Vikings drop 'the Wally,' will prep for district


Siuslaw junior Sam Ulrich has posted the top 800 and 1,500 times in the Sky-Em League this season.

The Siuslaw Vikings track and field team has decided to pass on the Wally Ciochetti Invitational, with rain in the forecast Friday at Cottage Grove.

"We feel like we will be better prepared for district next week if we use more of the time we have left to practice," Siuslaw coach Chris Johnson said.

The Sky-Em League Championships are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, May 13-14, at Junction City.

Competing teams include Siuslaw, Junction City, Cottage Grove, Elmira, Marist and Marshfield.

Several Vikings are at or near the top among district teams this season, including:

Boys

  • Hunter Petterson, first in 200, second in 100, second in 400
  • Sam Ulrich, first in 800, first in 1,500, third in 3,000
  • Chad Hughes, second in 1,500, second in 3,000
  • Wesley Nicholls, fifth in 200
  • Camp Lacouture, third in pole vault, fifth in 110 hurdles, fifth in 300 hurdles
  • Noel Hernandez, fourth in 300 hurdles
  • Boys, first in 4x400 relay, third in 4x100 relay
  • Jonathan Rose, first in shot put, first in discus, second in javelin
  • James Smith third in discus
  • Rhys Fleming, third in javelin

Girls

  • Rylee Colton, second in 800, second in 1,500, second in 3,000
  • Corduroy Holbrook, fifth in 800
  • Maya Wells, fifth in 1,500
  • Girls, fourth in 4x400 relay
