Siuslaw freshman Ryan Klampe fired a 2-over-par 74 Thursday to grab a seven-shot lead after the first round of the OSAA Class 4A Special District 3 boys golf tournament at the Eagle Point Golf Course.

Vikings senior Kayden Lane shot a first-round 124, senior Zion Jones 144 and sophomore Talin Loomis 150.

"We're really proud of how the team has improved, from the first day of the season to now," Siuslaw coach Chuck Johnson said.

"I compare it to a remodeled house: If you saw it the first day and then after the remodel, you'd say, 'Oh my goodness, what an improvement.'"

Klampe tees off at 12:52 p.m. Friday with the final group, which will include second-place Cruz Kilborn of North Valley, who had a 9-over 81 Thursday.

Keola Brown of Phoenix and Logan Strop of Klamath Union share third place with 85s, while Isaac Barnes of Klamath Union is fifth with an 86.

North Valley leads the seven-school team race with a 366 total. Henley was second with 377, followed by Klamath Union at 403, Mazama at 412, Phoenix at 417 and Siuslaw at 492. Hidden Valley was incomplete.

The top two teams and top five individuals advance to the state tournament, May 16-17, at Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks.

The Lady Vikings tee off Monday for the two-day girls district tournament at Bandon Crossings.
