The Siuslaw Vikings boys take their first steps to a district title Friday with finals in four events at the Sky-Em League track and field championships at Junction City.

The Vikings have three athletes in each event, with seniors Chad Hughes (3,000 meters) and Camp Lacouture (pole vault) in contention for titles.

Siuslaw junior Jonathan Rose has the district's top mark entering Friday's shot put finals.

Lacouture and junior Kyle Hughes, both state qualifiers last spring, take aim at a top finish in the pole vault.

The Vikings boys are three deep at 13 of 15 individual events, two deep in the other two and feature competitive in the relays, including the top-seeded 4x400 team.

The Lady Vikings are in five finals Friday, with senior Rylee Colton and sophomores Jane Lacouture and Corduroy Holbrook looking to improve on last spring's top 10 finishes.

Finals in the remaining 13 boys events and 11 girls events are Saturday.
