Vikings split with Pirates, head to playoffs


The Siuslaw Vikings are headed to the OSAA Class 4A baseball playoffs.

Siuslaw split a Sky-Em League doubleheader with visiting Marshfield on Monday at Dodson Field, rallying from seven runs down to win the opener, 9-8, and dropping the nightcap, 7-5.

The Vikings finished 10-15 overall and 5-10 in the regular season, and await Monday night's final rankings to determine their upcoming road play-in game.

Likely opponents are Tillamook or Baker/Powder Valley. Siuslaw's last play-in game was in 2014 at Newport, a 6-1 loss.

In the opener, Andrew Jensen-Norman hurled 4 2/3 innings shutout innings of relief for the win, striking our two while allowing two hits and three walks.

Junior Noah Dotson was 3-for-4 with 5 RBIs; senior Ethan Halpin was 3-for-4 with 2 runs; senior Jason Garcia 2-for-4 with 2 runs, a stolen base, a double and 2 RBIs, and Ian Sissel 2-for-3 with a double and 2 runs.

Marshfield finished 15-9 overall 11-4 in league.

Elsewhere, Junction City swept Cottage Grove, 9-5 and 9-3, while Marist swept a twin bill at Elmira, 13-2 and 21-5, both games 5 innings.
