Vikings boys finish in third place at state


The Siuslaw Vikings boys track and field team placed third Saturday in the OSAA Class 4A championships at Hayward Field in Eugene.

Marshfield won with 57 points, followed by Henley with 52 and Siuslaw with 45. Mazama had 43, Cottage Grove 42 and Junction City 39.

Next Season the now junior-dominated Vikings should be a force to be reckoned with in the Class 3A championships. Siuslaw moves to 3A this fall for at least the next four school years.

The Vikings had some notable marks Saturday:

  • Junior Hunter Petterson was third in the 200 in a personal-record 22.80a and fourth in the 400 in 51.92a. His 200 time was fourth-fastest in school history.
  • Junior Samuel Ulrich was third in the 800  in a PR 1:57.85a, sixth-fastest in school history.
  • Junior Noel Hernandez was fifth in the 300-meter hurdles in a PR 42.75a seconds, 18th fastest in school history.
  • Senior Chad Hughes was seventh in the 1,500 in a PR 4:12.96a.

The Lady Vikings' 4x400 relay team of Maya Wells, Corduroy Holbrook, Rylee Colton and Macali Lade was 10th place in 4::29.48a.
