Nyra Campbell has been a big part of the development of the Siuslaw Vikings soccer program as a volunteer since Day 1.

Now she will start Day 1 of next season as a paid assistant for the Vikings' boys team.

"She has been an invaluable member of the coaching staff since the inaugural season," Siuslaw coach Londi Tomaro said.

"She is passionate about helping players improve their technique and their understanding of the game.

"Her strong attacking mindset balances my defensive focus. We make a great coaching team."

The evolving Vikings soccer program is taking some significant steps next season, including fielding a girls varsity, coached by Amy Tregoning.

Both the girls and boys teams will be competing at the OSAA Class 3A level next school year in 3A/2A/1A Special District 3.

A Vikings varsity coed team competed in the 4A boys Sky-Em League the past two seasons after jump-starting the program with two seasons of coed play at the boys junior-varsity level.

Dan Langley and Raymundo Brito-Gonzoles also are assisting Tomaro, according to the school's OSAA website.

VIKINGS TO PLAY IN FATHER'S DAY WEEKEND TOURNAMENT

Siuslaw has three teams entered in this weekend's friendly tournament in Junction City.

"The playing fields will be small, teams will be six a side and halves will be 20 minutes," Tomaro said.

"It should be a fun tournament and a great weekend of soccer."

Siuslaw will compete in girls Girls Silver, Boys Silver and Boys Gold divisions. Matches are all day Saturday and Sunday at Junction City High School.
