SABC elects new leadership for 2022-23

The Siuslaw Athletic Booster Club has new leadership and it is full speed ahead for two big events, the Siuslaw Athletic Hall of Fame induction and the club's auction, both Saturday, Sept. 10.

Cameron Jagoe is president, Londi Tomaro vice president, Carl Frazier treasurer, Valerie Graybill secretary and Deanna Frazier membership coordinator.

"We are all excited to build the booster club back up after the lull created by the pandemic and officer turnover," Tomaro said.

"Our auction is scheduled, we're getting the business side of the organization squared away, and we're looking forward to doing great things for Siuslaw athletes."

The Hall of Fame event is 11:30 a.m. at the Florence Events Center, while the auction is tentatively 5 p.m. at Three Rivers Casino.

Tickets for the Hall of Fame induction — which includes lunch and no-host beverages— are on sale only at bit.ly/siuslawtickets. There will be no walk-up tickets.

This year's Hall of Fame class is the group chosen in 2019, prior to the pandemic.

Seven individuals and three track and field relay teams have been named to the Siuslaw Athletic Hall of Fame 2019 class.

Caley Nordahl (Class of 2001), Scott Parker (1983), Bruce Plaep (1972), Raelyn Robinson (2011), Andy Rodet (1992), Jesse Shutte (2006) and Ben Voogd (2005) are the newest members of the Hall of Fame.

Relay teams include the girls 4x100 team that won state titles in 1996 and 1997, the boys state 4x100 champions of 1996 and the boys 4x400 champions of 1997.

Girls relay members both years included Teola Wilkins, Kirsten Daniel, McKenzie McMullen and Alisa Worley.

The 1996 boys 4x100 team included Jeremy Long, Tristan Hartzell, David Richmond and Matt Pearson, and the 1997 boys 4x400 team included Jon Jensen, Pearson, Aaron Long and Richmond.

"It's a great group," Siuslaw athletic director Chris Johnson said. "One could argue that these are some of the best teams and some of the best individuals in Siuslaw High School history.

"They deserve an undivided spotlight. We didn't think we should add more since it's already a pretty full program. We are anticipating a large crowd as it is."

The individual inductees:

  • Caley Nordahl was a standout in volleyball, basketball and track and field. She competed in four events at state as a senior (high jump, triple jump, 400, 4x400). She held the school record for the triple jump (35-0) when she graduated, and is still No. 2 on the school high-jump list at 5-4.
  • Scott Parker helped power Siuslaw to a state AA football title in 1981, when he rushed for 1,439 yards (8.6 yards per carry) and 18 touchdowns and scored 126 points (No. 5 on school all-time list). He is third on the school's career rushing list with 2,523 yards. From Don Hunt, Vikings football historian: Scott Parker was also a three-sport athlete. He wrestled as a freshman, sophomore and junior. In baseball, he was a pitcher and catcher and earned all-league recognition (not sure if first team, second team or HM). Parker's 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in a 1981 first-round state playoff game against North Valley is one of the most iconic plays in school history. The Vikings trailed 24-7 at halftime. Parker's return kick-started a second-half comeback that resulted in a 26-24 Siuslaw victory. A week later, Parker sped 58 yards for the winning touchdown in a 12-6 state quarterfinals win over Central Linn, and followed that performance with a 149-yard rushing effort in a 28-7 semifinals win over Central High of Monmouth.
  • Bruce Plaep holds the oldest boys school record in track and field, a mark of 52 feet, 1 inch for the shot put set in 1972. (Trent Reavis came within a half inch in 2017.) Plaep, No. 4 all-time on the school discus list, held the record in the event when he graduated. Plaep also was a standout in football and basketball. From Don Hunt, Vikings football historian: Plaep was a three-year varsity member and two-year starter in basketball. He was the team MVP his senior year (1971-72). He was also an excellent free-throw marksman, hitting a high-water mark of 80 percent as a sophomore. In football, Plaep was a first-team all-conference defensive tackle on Siuslaw's 1971 squad that posted a 9-2 record, defeated Newport for the first time in 13 years, won the Coast League title and advanced to the state semifinals. Plaep also served as the Vikings' place-kicker. He converted 17 of 20 extra-point kicks in 1971, a conversion percentage of .850, 10th-best in school history.
  • Raelyn Robinson won state titles in cross country and the 1,500 meters. She is still the school record holder in the 1,500. She also was a member of three state championship teams. A four-year letter winner in basketball, she suffered a severe knee injury her senior year and missed the track and field season.
  • Andy Rodet won state championships in both the triple jump (44-0 in 1991) and the long jump (21-8.5 in 1992). His football career included a 96-yard run for a touchdown in 1991 against Bandon, the second longest in school history.
  • Jesse Shutte won 3A individual state golf titles in 2004, 2005 and 2006, posting the lowest score at any classification. He led the Vikings to the 2005 3A team title.
  • Ben Voogd is the Vikings' all-time leading scorer with 1,853 points. He averaged 26.3 points per game as a junior shooting guard and 18 points, 8.5 assists and 7.3 rebounds a game as a senior point guard. He was the primary backup point guard for Louisiana State's 2005-06 Final Four team.
