Six of seven Mountain Valley Conference schools will be suiting up for football Friday.

Siuslaw will not be one of them.

The defending 3A state champion Vikings open their season the following Friday (Sept. 2), hosting traditional foe Newport in a nonleague game at Hans Petersen Memorial Stadium.

Kickoff is 7 p.m.

This Friday, La Pine and Sisters will be at the Redmond Jamboree, Creswell and Pleasant Hill at the Sutherlin Jamboree and Elmira at the Junction City Jamboree.

Harrisburg hosts a jamboree entertaining Douglas, Cottage Grove and Scio.

The Vikings open league play with a bang, traveling to La Pine on Sept. 16. The winner of that game should be a big favorite to win league.

Sam Johnson is 21-7 entering his fourth season as head coach. Siuslaw was 12-0 last fall, 3-3 in spring 2021 and 6-4 in 2019.

Assistant coaches include Andy Johnson, Bob Teter, Jack Johnson, Jeff Gray, John Rose, Nick Johnson and Sean Campbell.

Coast Radio (FM106.9) will carry all nine Vikings regular-season games with Bob Sneddon doing the play-by-play and Randy Paredes statistics and analysis.
